Clients have been going to this special “Mrs. Mitchall’s Tea Plantation” for over 20 years and 99% have
enjoyed the experience.
The Kiambethu tea farm is about an hours drive away from the hustle and bustle from Nairobi and as such
makes a welcome day trip from the capital for adults and children!
Situated twenty miles from Nairobi, Kiambethu has been the family home of one of the earliest tea growers in
Kenya. The farm dates back to 1910 and the present house, set amidst colorful gardens, has been home to four
generations. You will arrive at 11:00 a.m. and over a cup of tea or coffee the process of making tea is informally
explained, followed by an opportunity to see tea in the field. You will take a walk in indigenous forest with the
resident Kenyan guide who will identify the plants and explain how they are traditionally used. You will see the
Colobus monkeys close up and wander in the gardens, which are home to a wide variety of birds. When you
return to the house, you will enjoy a pre-lunch drink on the veranda with sweeping views across the tea fields to
the Ngong Hills. Lunch is prepared with vegetables from the garden and desserts are topped with cream from
the herd of Channel Island cows on the farm.
The tour ends with a relaxed lunch. Again most of the produce is locally sourced and when making reservations
inform us of any dietary requirements! The veggie options are fantastic. Lunch is a 3 course affair with
complementary beverages – wine, beers, sherry, soft drinks and of course teas and coffee!
Where you walk, see birds, see tea farming and tea process making, have lunch freshly cooked and a great get away from Nairobi for only 30 mins.
