The Chalbi Desert is situated near the border with Ethiopia, east of Lake Turkana. It contains the town of North Horr, and the closest major urban center is Marsabit.The desert spans approximately 1,000 square kilometers and lies between Mount Marsabit and Lake Turkana.
We will depart very early in the morning for our safari to explore the northern part of Kenya through Nanyuki where we will have a short stopover at the equator crossing point, we will later on enjoy the beautiful farmlands of Timau to Isiolo for the last minute shopping and fuelling. From Isiolo we will drive Appx 230KM to Ngurunit. The drive will be welcoming us to the beauty of the north, the scenic hills including the famous Mt Ololokwe, beautiful Samburu people and large herds of camels and other livestock. We will arrive in Ngurunit a remote area tucked away at the base of the Ndoto Mountains, a place you’ll seldom hear of, but that is incredibly beautiful. We later set up our camp, bonfire. After an early morning breakfast in Ngurunit at rocks pools as we take a cool morning dip, we will set off for Jade Sea (Lake Turkana), with the amazing views of the Turkana wind farm, the breeze of Lake Turkana will be welcoming in time for lunch. On this day we will visit the el-molo villages to learn more about their culture and their way of living, we will also pass through the desert Museum to learn more on archeological discoveries activities that has been undertaken in the north. After lunch we will head to the lake for a swim and enjoy sunsets. (Optional Visit Loyangalani ancient rock art site, boat excursion, Oasis tour) Dinner and overnight stay in our Loiyangalani camp. After an early breakfast we will leave Loiyangalani for Sibiloi national park Located on the wild and rugged shores of Lake Turkana – the cradle of mankind – Sibiloi is home to important archaeological sites including Koobi Fora where the fossil remains have contributed more to the understanding of human evolution than any other site in the continent making it world’s leading pre historic site. The area is characterized by semi-desert habitat and open plains flanked by volcanic formations including Mount Sibiloi, where the remains of a petrified forest can be seen. Sibiloi serves as a stopover for migrant waterfowl and is a major breeding ground for the Nile crocodile. Terrestrial wildlife includes zebras, Grant gazelles, lions, leopards, stripped hyenas, Beisa Oryx, greater kudu, cheetahs and northern topi among others. Sibiloi is surrounded by the Turkana, the Gabra and the Dassanach who are communities with very rich and unpolluted traditional cultures. We will take a visit to the small Kenyan Dassanech tribe who originate from Ethiopia,found in the small frontier village of illeret. Visit the Dassanach fishing village at Serisho at the Kenya/Ethiopia border beacons and cross over to Ethiopia for a drink and delicious Ethiopian food. MEAL PLAN: BREAKFAST,LUNCH, DINNER
After breakfast we will head out of Sibiloi to the deserts. The journey leads you to a beautiful oasis at the edge of the Chalbi desert which is the largest desert we have in Kenya. The vast landscapes and open desert will amaze you, Chalbi Desert has a lot to offer in picturesque sceneries and tranquil oasis. We will have dinner and overnight stay in Kalacha /North Horr MEAL PLAN: BREAKFAST,LUNCH, DINNER
After breakfast we will head out to Mount marsabit which is a densely forested mountain and three crater lakes provide a haven for a variety of birdlife, mammals and reptiles. The beautiful Marsabit National Park is a refuge for huge tusked bull elephants. The park is famous for its elephant named Ahmed that was provided with 24hr security surveillance by presidential decree in the 70’s, to demonstrate Kenya’s commitment to wildlife conservation. After breakfast we will start our journey back to Nairobi. With an optional lunch in Nanyuki Arrive Nairobi in the evening after an adventurous northern exploration journey MEAL PLAN: BREAKFAST.
